Rakdos Players Rejoice: Molten Collapse Spoiler Generates Excitement

Xavier Ward

A new spoiler from the Lost Caverns of Ixalan set has Rakdos Magic: The Gathering players buzzing with excitement. Molten Collapse, a powerful Sorcery spell, is generating a lot of interest due to its potential playability in multiple formats.

Molten Collapse is a two-drop Sorcery removal spell that offers an improved version of the popular card Dreadbore. With the addition of the Descend mechanic, this modal spell provides players with additional options.

Molten Collapse
Mana Cost BR
Type Sorcery
Rarity Rare
Ability “Choose one. If you Descended this turn, you may choose both instead.”
Choice One “Destroy target creature or Planeswalker.”
Choice Two “Destroy target noncreature, nonland permanent with a mana value one or less.”

Molten Collapse allows players to sacrifice their own permanents, which aligns with the Black and Red color themes in Magic: The Gathering. By utilizing the Descend mechanic, which triggers when a permanent is put into the graveyard during the turn, players can choose both options of the spell if they have Descended.

This versatile removal spell can target troublesome noncreature or nonland permanents such as Sol Ring, Witch’s Oven, and even Map tokens. While Dreadbore was already a cheap Sorcery removal option, Molten Collapse offers the potential for a two-for-one removal, albeit still at Sorcery speed.

In the Standard format, Molten Collapse has numerous targets when its controller Descends. It can remove Treasure tokens and one-drop Sagas like Kumano Faces Kakkazan. Although its impact on the Standard format may be limited, it is expected to perform well in Limited formats and has potential in Pioneer, Modern, and Commander.

Players will have the opportunity to test out Molten Collapse at prerelease events when Lost Caverns of Ixalan releases in local game stores on November 10th.
