Riot Games developers have acknowledged that certain champions in League of Legends are becoming too powerful and will be receiving nerfs in the upcoming Patch 13.20. The targeted champions include Kai’Sa, Zed, Quinn, Akshan, and Bel’Veth. While these changes are considered temporary fixes, more extensive adjustments are planned for the preseason.
With Patch 13.19 already released, the focus of the developers has shifted towards Season 14 and the major 14.1 preseason update. However, this does not mean that they are neglecting the need to nerf overperforming champions, especially those who are currently dominating the late-season meta.
Matt “RiotPhroxon” Leung-Harrison, League’s lead gameplay designer, took to Twitter to announce the five champions set to receive nerfs in Patch 13.20. These champions include Kai’Sa, Bel’Veth, Quinn, Zed, and Akshan. Early data suggests that these champions are too strong and require adjustments. For example, Kai’Sa has seen a significant increase in win rate with her Umbral Glaive build, making her a dominant force in both high and low Elo matches.
The Zed nerfs are particularly interesting as he has struggled with a low victory ratio for most of the year. However, the developers believe that his mage build, when combined with Ravenous Hydra, is becoming too powerful. Instead of adjusting the item, they have decided to nerf Zed himself. These changes, along with upcoming assassin adjustments, may potentially remove Zed from the metagame. It is important to note that these Patch 13.20 nerfs are aimed at a potentially overpowered future version of Zed, rather than the currently underwhelming one.
The developers have emphasized that these nerfs are not definitive and final for the champions heading into 2024. They serve as a temporary solution for the remainder of the season, with further adjustments planned for the preseason. As the balance team focuses on preseason changes and resolves any issues with the 2023 League World Championship patch, these nerfs will suffice for now.
