Riot Games to Remove Mythic Items in League of Legends for 2024 Season

Riot Games has announced that they will be removing the Mythic items system from League of Legends for the upcoming 2024 season. Lead designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison explained the decision in a recent developer’s blog post, citing various reasons for the change.

Originally, Mythic items were introduced to enhance champion fantasies and provide unique effects across different classes. However, balancing these items proved to be a challenge, especially with the ever-growing roster of champions. Designing new champions became more complex due to the need to account for the impact of Mythic items.

The limited number of Mythic items also posed difficulties in catering to the diverse range of champion classes and playstyles. Each champion can be built and played in various ways, making it challenging to create Mythics that would satisfy all users. As a result, Mythic items had to offer a multitude of stats to be useful for multiple roles, leading to an overwhelming amount of complexity.

Riot Games could have created more Mythic items to address this issue, but it would have further complicated gameplay. There is a limit to the number of items that can be added to the game before it becomes too convoluted. Additionally, the dominance of certain Mythic items caused a lack of diversity in the meta, with multiple champions and roles being forced to purchase the same item.

To address these concerns, Riot Games has decided to remove Mythic items entirely from the game. This will allow for a more focused approach to champion design and itemization. Even Legendary items will undergo changes, with their unique effects being reduced to ensure that individual champion strengths take precedence over item reliance.

The removal of Mythic items will take effect in the 2024 season of League of Legends. Riot Games aims to streamline gameplay and create a more balanced and diverse meta for players to enjoy.
