Earlier this year, rumors circulated that Bethesda’s highly anticipated game, Starfield, would not include DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) support. DLSS, a popular upscaling technology by Nvidia, allows players to enhance their gaming experience by running games at higher resolutions and settings without sacrificing performance.
Last month, it was confirmed that Starfield would indeed launch without DLSS support. This decision sparked outrage among fans, with some even speculating that AMD, one of the game’s sponsors, had prohibited Bethesda from implementing a competing technology. AMD responded to these claims, stating that Bethesda has the freedom to choose any upscaling technology they desire.
While fans eagerly await an official response from Bethesda, modders have taken matters into their own hands. The most popular Starfield mod on NexusMods replaces AMD’s FSR2 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 2) with Nvidia’s DLSS technology.
But that’s not the only mod available. The sixth-most popular mod also offers DLSS implementation instead of AMD’s upscaling technology. Clearly, the player base is frustrated with Bethesda’s decision to exclude DLSS and XeSS from their game.
These reactions are not surprising, considering Nvidia’s dominance in the PC gaming market. According to Steam’s August 2023 survey, Nvidia graphics cards hold the majority of market share, with the top 12 most popular cards being Nvidia products. AMD only appears from the 13th position and below.
Bethesda’s choice to withhold DLSS, a highly sought-after feature, from such a large number of players seems counterintuitive. However, since the game has not been officially released and is currently only available to pre-order customers, there is still a possibility that Starfield will receive full DLSS support after its official launch on September 6. Until then, modders are taking advantage of the situation, creating a paradise for those seeking DLSS implementation.
