SumaiL’s Legal Battle with Evil Geniuses Heads to Trial

superadmin

Syed “SumaiL” Hassan, the renowned Dota 2 player, will be heading to trial on November 6 in his ongoing legal battle against Evil Geniuses (EG). The trial comes after months of extended discussions and negotiations between the two parties.

In March, it was revealed that SumaiL had filed a lawsuit against EG, accusing the organization of taking advantage of him during and after his time with them. The legal documents, obtained by reporter Richard Lewis, shed light on the alleged mistreatment of the young and vulnerable player.

Recently, key witnesses have been approached to testify in the trial after SumaiL’s legal team denied almost all of EG’s 26 “requests for admission.” These requests were related to various aspects of the case.

According to SumaiL’s representation, when he signed a five-year contract with EG in September 2016, he was promised a 400,000 share ownership stake in the company, in addition to his salary. However, when Peak6 Strategic Capital group acquired EG in May 2019, SumaiL’s stake converted into mixed stock that only benefited Peak6 members.

Furthermore, it was alleged that EG offered SumaiL a “mutual release” or termination clause after he was moved to the inactive roster following The International 2019. These offers supposedly limited his options and imposed unfair obligations and forfeitures. In January 2020, when SumaiL left the organization, EG reportedly offered to buy his stock for $1 million, but only if he retired from competitive play.

SumaiL’s legal team has denied most of EG’s admission requests, stating that the organization took advantage of a young and vulnerable player at various points during his tenure and afterward. They argue that EG’s requests are overly broad and stand by their initial assessment.

The trial is scheduled for November 6, and several former EG staff and players, including Fear, Universe, Arteezy, Cr1t-, ppd, Philip Aram, and Nicole Lapointe Jameson, are listed as potential witnesses. The final conference to confirm trial details will take place in late October.

Meanwhile, SumaiL is currently playing with Team Secret and focusing on his Dota career after The International 12.
