In a fitting tribute to Team Spirit’s victory at The International, Valve has officially changed the name of the dominant hero, Spirit Breaker, to “Team Spirit Breaker.” This hero played a crucial role in Team Spirit’s success, with a comfortable 52 percent win rate in the current patch.
Spirit Breaker’s rise to prominence was gradual, thanks to constant buffs to its abilities. Despite some nerfs in the previous patch, the hero made a comeback in the meta due to the prevalence of Hand of Midas and the larger map. While not as popular as other heroes, Spirit Breaker contributed significantly to its team’s victories in every game it was picked.
Team Spirit’s offlaner, Collapse, showcased the full potential of Team Spirit Breaker during TI 2023. Collapse dismantled several teams throughout the tournament, including a dominant performance in the grand finals against Gaimin Gladiators. This hero’s consistency played a crucial role in Team Spirit’s victory over the dominant Western European team.
Team Spirit’s journey to becoming the TI10 champions was remarkable. They flew under the radar for most of 2023 but gained momentum leading up to the Riyadh Masters, where they convincingly defeated Team Liquid, who had consistently placed second throughout the year.
During TI 2023, Team Spirit remained undefeated in the group stage and only dropped one game each to Team Liquid and Virtus.Pro during the playoffs. Their near-perfect run throughout the tournament was commemorated by Valve with special stickers displaying their TI12 championship.
With their second TI victory, Team Spirit joins OG as the only two-time champions. The future looks bright for these Eastern European stars, and we eagerly await their accomplishments in 2024. But for now, they deserve a well-earned rest after their incredible performance.
