Understanding the New Format of The International 2023
Valve has introduced several major changes to the format of TI 2023. The group stage now features four groups of five teams, and a seeding decider has been added for the playoffs. The event itself is split into two parts: The Road to The International and The International.
During Phase One of The Road to TI, each group plays four round-robin best-of-two matches over two days. The fifth-placed team in each group is eliminated, with tiebreakers played if necessary. The remaining four teams from each group then compete in a final best-of-three matchup. The top two teams face the third/fourth-ranked teams from other groups, with the winners advancing to the upper bracket of the playoffs.
The playoffs consist of 16 teams, with eight in the upper bracket and eight in the lower bracket. All series in the playoffs are best-of-three, and only the grand finals are best-of-five.
