Urshifu and Amoonguss: The Battle of the Titans in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet VGC

superadmin

Urshifu and Amoonguss have become the center of attention in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet VGC. While Urshifu is causing havoc and frustration among players, even the mighty Legendary Pokémon are not safe from the tiny mushroom, Amoonguss.

Urshifu’s dominance in VGC is undeniable. Its Water/Fighting-type Rapid Strike form has consistently performed well in major events, earning it a reputation as one of the best Pokémon picks. However, many professional players are unhappy with its presence, believing that it is ruining competitive play.

Former Pokémon World Champion Wolfe Glick expressed his dissatisfaction with Urshifu, stating that it is “ruining competitive Pokémon.” This sentiment was echoed by VGC player Gabriel Agati, who highlighted the deadly combination of Urshifu and Tornadus. With Tornadus providing Prankster Tailwind support, Urshifu can easily secure quick knockouts, making them one of the most formidable duos in the current metagame.

VGC caster and Beastcoast creator Rosemary Kelley also joined in the discussion, sharing a meme that humorously depicted her desire to remove Urshifu from the metagame entirely.

Urshifu’s bad reputation stems from its signature Ability, Unseen Fist, which allows it to bypass and strike through Protect. This ability poses a significant threat since Protect is a commonly used move to ensure a Pokémon’s safety for a turn. However, no Pokémon, including other Urshifu, is safe from Urshifu’s Unseen Fists.

In addition, Urshifu’s signature attack, Surging Strikes, always hits three times and lands critical hits. This means that Defense boosts and Focus Sashes are ineffective in protecting against its onslaught.

Despite Urshifu’s dominance, Amoonguss emerges as a formidable counter to its Rapid Strike form. While many consider Urshifu to be overpowered, Amoonguss can effortlessly withstand its attacks and mock its efforts.

VGC player Donghun Youm highlights that an Amoonguss equipped with the Rocky Helmet is the bane of Rapid Strike Urshifu’s existence. Not only does Amoonguss resist both of Urshifu’s STAB attacks, but the Rocky Helmet also inflicts significant damage on the bear for using Surging Strikes. Each strike results in Urshifu dealing more damage to itself than to Amoonguss, akin to repeatedly punching a rocky surface without learning from past mistakes.

However, Amoonguss must remain cautious of Urshifu’s ally, Tornadus. With moves like Bleakwind Storm or Hurricane, Tornadus can eliminate the mushroom and deal super-effective damage, further bolstering Urshifu’s dominance.
