Pokémon Scarlet and Violet The Teal Mask DLC reintroduced the powerful move Scald, causing concern among competitive players. With its high base power, perfect accuracy, and a chance to burn the target, Scald is considered one of the best moves in the franchise. However, players are now expressing their disappointment in Game Freak for not giving female Basculegion access to this move.
A player recently pointed out the consistent disadvantage faced by female Basculegion compared to its male counterpart. Apart from design differences, the main distinction lies in their stats. Female Basculegion leans towards Special Attack as a mixed attacker, while male Basculegion excels in physical attacks. This puts female Basculegion at an offensive disadvantage, as its Special Attack stat is lower than the male’s Attack stat.
Furthermore, when examining Basculegion’s move pool, it becomes evident that many of its best moves are physical, such as Last Respects, Wave Crash, and Phantom Force. This favors the male physical attacker, leaving the female mixed attacker with limited special options.
In the previous game, Legends: Arceus, female Basculegion could at least benefit from the move Calm Mind, which boosts its Special Attack and Special Defense. However, for unknown reasons, Game Freak removed Calm Mind from Basculegion’s move pool in Scarlet and Violet.
The situation worsened for female Basculegion in The Teal Mask DLC, where the TM for Scald made a comeback. Scald is considered one of the best Water-type attacks in the game, and its inclusion could have significantly buffed female Basculegion. Unfortunately, Basculegion was not among the small number of Pokémon granted access to Scald in the Gen IX games.
With male Basculegion’s superior offensive stats and a move pool that favors physical attackers, it is clear that female Basculegion lacks the necessary tools to compete with its counterpart. Even if it had gained access to Scald in The Teal Mask DLC, it would still fall short in terms of power. However, the addition of Scald could have provided an opportunity for the female fish to fish for a 30 percent burn, potentially changing the game for her.
